FAQ
Answers to common questions about BBQ United, the BBQ World Cup, and how to get involved.
Qualifying & Entry
What is the BBQ World Cup?
The BBQ World Cup (BWC) is a four-day BBQ competition, expo, and festival held in Las Vegas, culminating in a $1,000,000 Pitmaster Championship — the largest single prize in the history of competitive BBQ. It brings together qualifying teams from sanctioned events worldwide to determine one Grand Champion team and pitmaster.
How many total teams will compete in the BBQ World Cup?
One hundred (100) teams. The field is built from BWC-sanctioned Qualifier winners and at-large invitations issued by BWC. Field bracket structure, tier composition, and alternate procedures are defined in the Official Competition Rules.
How do I qualify for the BBQ World Cup?
There are two paths to qualify. First, win or place at a sanctioned BWC Qualifier event listed on the official Qualifier Schedule at bbqworldcup.com/world-cup. Second, earn an at-large invitation through BWC based on season-long performance, ranking, or merit consideration. Qualifier results are submitted by the host event and verified by BWC before invitations are issued.
How many teams qualify from each event?
Each sanctioned Qualifier earns a defined number of qualifying spots based on event tier (Major, Regional, or Open). The exact allocation per event is published with each Qualifier listing on the BBQ United schedule page.
Do I need to compete in a sanctioned event to qualify?
Yes. Qualification requires placement at a BWC-sanctioned Qualifier or an at-large invitation issued by BWC. Competing at a non-sanctioned event does not generate a qualifying invitation.
Who receives the qualification invite?
The qualification invite is issued to the head cook of the qualifying team. The team registered for the Qualifier event is the official team of record — it is the team that can earn the qualifying spot. The head cook listed or recognized at the Qualifier event is the head cook of record — the individual who qualifies for the BBQ World Cup and signs the Pitmaster Agreement.
Can I transfer my qualification to someone else?
No. There are no substitutions for qualification. The qualifying position belongs to the registered team of record and its head cook of record. The head cook cannot transfer or pass the qualification to anyone else, and must compete at BWC. Only the teammate may be substituted, as described under Team Requirements & Eligibility.
What if the Qualifier uses different rules than the BBQ World Cup?
Local Qualifier rules govern only the Qualifier itself. At BWC, every team competes under the Official BBQ World Cup Competition Rules, which will be published in December 2026 so every qualified team has them well in advance. Rest assured — the format will be very similar in style to the competitions pitmasters already know and compete in.
Is there a deadline to claim my spot?
Yes. Once invited, qualifying head cooks have a defined window to confirm their spot, sign the Pitmaster Agreement, and submit team registration. Spots not confirmed by the deadline are released to the next eligible team. Specific deadlines are stated in each individual invitation letter.
Is there a fee to compete after I qualify?
Yes. Qualifying to compete at the BBQ World Cup carries a competition fee: $500 for BBQ United members and $1,250 for non-members. This is not a Qualifier entry fee — it is the fee to compete in the BBQ World Cup itself once you have earned your spot.
BBQ United Membership
What is BBQ United?
BBQ United is the membership platform behind the BBQ World Cup ecosystem — a community of pitmasters, judges, fans, and BBQ businesses with access to the official Qualifier schedule, member content, the BBQ Boardroom podcast, exclusive BWC ticket windows, member-only competitions, and a member card. BBQ United is the year-round home of the BWC community; the World Cup is the once-a-year peak event.
How do I join BBQ United?
Sign up at bbqunited.com. Free and Premium tiers are available. Premium members receive priority BWC ticket access, member-only events, expanded content, and the official BBQ United member card. Pitmaster, Judge, and Fan profile types each unlock different platform features.
Do I need to be a BBQ United member to compete or attend?
No. BBQ United membership is not required to compete at a Qualifier or to attend the BBQ World Cup as a fan. However, members receive earlier ticket windows, preferred pricing, and platform features that non-members do not.
Team Requirements & Eligibility
What is the team eligibility and No Super Teams policy?
Each team has one head cook, and one registered teammate is permitted. Under the No Super Teams policy, a teammate cannot have been a head cook on any BBQ team for more than 3 sanctioned contests in each of the last two years. All teams and teammates will be reviewed by the Pitmaster Committee. BBQ World Cup has final say on all teammates and may deny any teammate it determines violates the intent of the No Super Teams policy.
Are there eligibility requirements for the teammate?
Yes. The teammate must comply with the No Super Teams policy, execute the BWC waiver, and be named at the time of team registration. All teammates are reviewed by the Pitmaster Committee, and BBQ World Cup has final say on every teammate. Any competitor under 18 requires a parent or guardian's signed consent to participate. A teammate may not appear on more than one BWC team in the same year.
What is the Pitmaster Committee?
The Pitmaster Committee is a group of experienced pitmasters who help BBQ United identify established events around the world that may be a good fit as sanctioned Qualifiers, and who share general insight into competition BBQ. The Committee also reviews all teams and teammates under the No Super Teams policy and advises BWC, but BBQ World Cup makes the final decision on every teammate. The Committee does not set competition rules, handle judging, or decide results. All competition rules, judging, and results are managed by BWC.
Do team members need credentials?
Yes. All registered competitors receive official BWC credentials at on-site check-in. Credentials are required for site access, restricted areas, and competition zones. Lost credentials may be replaced at the on-site Competitor HQ for a nominal fee.
Can I adjust my team after qualifying?
Limited adjustments are permitted. The head cook cannot be replaced — the qualifying position belongs to the team of record and its head cook of record. The teammate may be substituted before the published roster lock date for any reason, and after roster lock only for documented emergencies approved by BWC.
Do teams need insurance or special permits?
BWC carries the master event insurance covering the venue and the official competition footprint. Teams operating their own commercial equipment, food trucks, or selling product on-site are responsible for their own commercial general liability coverage and any local Clark County or City of Las Vegas permits. Specific requirements are detailed in the Pitmaster Packet.
Event Logistics
Where will the BBQ World Cup take place?
The BBQ World Cup will be held in Las Vegas through our partnership with Caesars Entertainment, in the event space behind The LINQ.
When will the BBQ World Cup take place?
April 8–11, 2027, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The four-day event runs from team check-in and the opening ceremony on Day 1 through the Pitmaster Championship Final on Day 4.
How long is the event?
Four days. The event spans competition rounds, the BBQ World Cup Expo, masterclasses and demos, fan experience programming, and the Pitmaster Championship finale.
What can I expect at the BBQ World Cup?
The BBQ World Cup is a full four-day festival built around the competition. Expect: The Expo, where brands activate, sample, and give out product — sauces, seasonings, rubs, grill and smoker manufacturers, charcoal companies, and more. The Pitmaster Arena, the heart of the competition, with major partner activations and free samples. The International Village, where 8+ countries cook their national BBQ styles alongside celebrity pitmasters from around the world. Restaurants from across the country serving their signature BBQ for purchase, plus concession stands throughout the grounds. A Kids Zone packed with activities — kids 10 and under get in free. And live music, with 12+ concert acts across Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Will teams have assigned spaces?
Yes. Each team is assigned a defined cooking space (targeting approximately 10x20 or 10x25 feet — final dimensions are being confirmed). All of a team's own equipment must fit within their assigned space. Teams may not exceed their footprint.
Will power, water, ice, and trash service be available?
Yes. Power, potable water, ice, and centralized trash and grease disposal are provided at each team's cooking space. Specific hookup details will be confirmed as event logistics are finalized.
Are trailers or RVs allowed?
Not at the current location. However, we have relationships that may allow for exceptions — please reach out to info@bbqworldcup.com to discuss your needs.
Will there be overnight security?
Yes. The competition footprint will be secured overnight with credentialed access only and 24-hour security personnel for all four days of the event.
Competition Format
What is the BBQ World Cup competition format?
100 teams begin competition on Friday. The field narrows to 50, then to 25, building toward the Pitmaster Championship Final. We are also developing a potential score-based last-chance qualifier opportunity. The full Official Competition Rules will be announced in December 2026 — and the format will be very similar in style to the competitions pitmasters already know.
How is judging handled?
Judging is done by a credentialed, vetted panel of certified BBQ judges blended with celebrity and industry judges across rounds. Judges are screened, calibrated, and assigned by the BWC Judging Director. Scoring methodology, blind-box procedures, and tie-breaker rules are defined in the Official Rules.
What equipment and food do teams need to bring?
BBQ World Cup provides each team with a cooking space, a tent, tables, power, potable water, ice, trash and grease disposal, and sanitation. Everything else is brought by the team — cookers, fuel, meat and proteins, sauces, rubs, tools, and consumables. All of a team's equipment must fit within their assigned cooking space; teams that cannot fit within their footprint will not be able to compete. A complete permitted-and-prohibited list will be provided in the Pitmaster Packet.
Prizes & Payouts
What is the BBQ World Cup prize purse?
BWC features a $1,000,000 Pitmaster Championship — the largest single prize in the history of competitive BBQ — awarded to the winning Pitmaster team. Additional category prizes, perpetual trophies, sponsor awards, and Grand Champion recognition are paid out across rounds. The full prize-purse breakdown is published in the Official Rules and the Pitmaster Packet.
When and how are prizes paid?
Cash prizes are presented at the awards ceremony on Day 4 and processed by the BWC finance team via wire or check following the event. Required tax documentation, payout timing, and any withholding applicable to US and international winners will be detailed in the Official Rules and Pitmaster Packet. Tax obligations on prize money are the responsibility of the winner.
Expo & Fan Experience
What is the BBQ World Cup Expo?
The BBQ World Cup Expo is the consumer-facing trade show and festival floor that runs alongside the competition. It is the largest dedicated BBQ expo in the world, featuring brand activations, product launches, tastings, masterclasses, live entertainment, celebrity appearances, and direct-to-consumer retail.
Who is this event for?
BWC is built for three audiences: competitors and the BBQ industry, brands and sponsors, and the BBQ-loving fan — anyone who grills, smokes, eats, or watches BBQ content.
What can brands do at the Expo?
Brands can activate at the Expo through booth space, sampling and tasting rights, on-site sales, sponsorship of competition rounds and stages, branded content production, athlete and pitmaster integrations, hospitality, and retail. Custom integrated programs are built through the BWC sponsorship team.
How many vendors will be there?
Vendor capacity is still being finalized. Vendor inquiries may be submitted now via the website Sponsor and Vendor Inquiry form to be added to the priority outreach list when applications open.
Do I need a ticket to attend the Expo?
Yes. Expo admission requires a ticket. General Admission and tiered upgrades will be available, with priority access for BBQ United Premium members and qualifying-team friends-and-family blocks. Kids 10 and under are free.
Will there be BBQ masterclasses?
Yes. The Masterclass Stage features paid, ticketed sessions led by champion pitmasters and BBQ industry leaders. Free demos run continuously on the Demo Stage. Programming is announced in waves leading into the event.
Will there be free samples?
Yes. Sponsor and vendor sampling is a core part of the Expo experience, subject to local health permit requirements. Sampling availability is brand- and product-specific and will be posted with the event program.
Is the BBQ World Cup family-friendly?
Yes. The Expo and Fan Experience zones are designed to be family-friendly across all four days, with a Kids Zone, kids' activities, and free admission for kids 10 and under. Certain late-evening entertainment may be 21+ where alcohol is served.
Can spectators watch the competition?
Yes. The competition footprint is designed for spectator viewing, with elevated walkways, viewing platforms, behind-the-scenes Pit Pass tours, and broadcast-quality screens around the field. Fans get closer to the cooks than at any BBQ event in the world.
Will there be live music?
Yes. Live music programs across multiple stages each day, anchored by country music headliners. Lineup announcements will be released in waves leading into the event.
Tickets & Travel
When will BBQ World Cup tickets go on sale?
Tickets are planned to go on sale in September 2026. BBQ United members receive a priority window before public on-sale.
Will tickets sell out?
BWC is a capacity-constrained event in a destination market. We expect strong demand. Securing BBQ United membership and joining the ticket waitlist are the two best ways to ensure access.
What types of tickets will be available?
Ticket tiers will include General Admission, multi-day passes, VIP Hospitality, Pit Pass behind-the-scenes access, and Championship Final premium seating. A package ticketing partnership is also under evaluation to bundle hotel, ticket, and experience for out-of-market fans. Kids 10 and under are free.
Where can I buy tickets?
Tickets are on sale now through Tixr, our official ticketing partner, at tixr.com/groups/bbqworldcup. You can also use the Get Tickets button at the top of any page on bbqunited.com. Tickets purchased through unauthorized channels are not guaranteed valid.
Will there be hotel partners or travel discounts?
Yes. Las Vegas hotel packages for the BBQ World Cup are available now through Jampack, our official travel partner, at jampack.com/events/bbq-world-cup-2027. You can also use the Book Hotel button at the top of any page on bbqunited.com.
Judging & Volunteering
How do I become a BBQ World Cup judge?
Apply through the Judge profile on bbqunited.com. Applications are reviewed by the BWC Judging Director. Selected judges receive credentials, calibration training, and assignment to specific rounds. Judging slots are limited and competitive.
Do I need KCBS, CBA, or MBN certification?
Certification from a recognized sanctioning body is preferred and accelerates application review. It is not strictly required — non-certified industry experts and culinary professionals are considered for celebrity and specialty rounds.
Do judges receive credentials?
Yes. Selected judges receive official BWC credentials, access to the judges' hospitality area, and reimbursement or stipend support per the published judge program.
Can I volunteer?
Yes. If you're interested in volunteering — in logistics, hospitality, fan experience, and more — reach out to info@bbqworldcup.com to be added to the list and notified when the volunteer program opens.
Media & Vending
Can media attend?
Yes. Credentialed media are welcome and encouraged. Media credentials are issued through the BWC media relations team and are required for press access, photo positions, and interviews. Embargoed announcements, b-roll, and broadcast partnerships are coordinated separately.
Will the event be broadcast?
Broadcast and streaming distribution for BWC is in active development. Updates will be announced through official channels.
Can teams sell food or product?
BWC operates two distinct zones. The Pitmaster Arena is for competition only — teams may not sell food, sample to the public, or transact retail from inside the arena. The BWC Expo is the commercial floor, where teams are welcome to sell branded product such as sauces, rubs, apparel, cookbooks, and merchandise through the Team Retail Program. Health-permit, sales-tax, and food-safety requirements apply to anything sold or sampled on-site.
Registration & Fees
Is registering my BBQ team on the website free?
Yes. Creating a BBQ United team profile and listing your team in the directory is free. Registration is required to be eligible to receive Qualifier and BWC communications and to claim a qualifying invitation if earned.
What is the cost to enter a Qualifier?
Qualifier entry fees are set by each individual host event, not by BWC. Refer to each Qualifier's listing on the official Qualifier Schedule for entry fee, rules, prize purse, and qualifying-spot allocation.
