Brad Leighninger: Gettin' Basted Hall of Famer and BBQ World Cup Qualifier
Brad Leighninger has won the Jack, a Memphis in May world title, and more than 150 grand championships, and he sits in two halls of fame. In July he flew to Croatia and won again. In April of 2027 he and Gettin' Basted cook in Las Vegas for $1,000,000.
Brad Leighninger does not cook barbecue close to home. He flies to it.
Most weekends he boards a plane with his rubs, borrows a smoker when he lands, tracks down good meat in a place he has never cooked in, and beats the field anyway.
Last year he won eleven or twelve contests that way, on equipment that was not his, in towns that were not his.
In July he did it in Croatia.
At the No Smoke, No Glory competition in Zagreb, Leighninger and his Gettin' Basted team out-cooked a 16-team field to win the one thing a career full of trophies had never handed him: a seat at the BBQ World Cup.
In April of 2027 he will cook in Las Vegas, where 100 teams from around the world will compete for $1,000,000.
Who Is Brad Leighninger of Gettin' Basted
Call him Brad and you are talking to one of the most decorated pitmasters alive.
He runs five restaurants across the Branson, Missouri area, the biggest and oldest of them the two Gettin' Basted locations, and he has stacked up more than 150 grand and reserve grand championships on the professional circuit.
He won the 2021 Jack Daniel's World Championship Invitational. He was part of the world-champion Blues Hog team at Memphis in May. He has reserve grand championed the American Royal. He is a four-time Kansas City Barbeque Society Team of the Year, the only pitmaster ever to claim that title four times.
In 2025 the Kansas City Barbeque Society put him in its Hall of Fame, and in 2026 his home state did the same, inducting him into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame as a barbecue champion.
That last one lands for him. Barbecue, he will tell you, is definitively a sport, and now he has the plaque to prove it.
How Brad Leighninger Got Into Competition BBQ and Named Gettin' Basted
The road to all of it started in a kitchen, not a contest.
Both of Brad's grandmothers were excellent cooks, and his grandfather farmed hogs up in northwest Missouri, so meat and fire were in the family long before they were a career. His first taste of real barbecue came in Cape Girardeau, the Missouri town that is home to Old Hickory smokers, where he worked at a place called the Pilot House that ran six of them and smoked hams all day for catering.
He was a competitive kid, the kind who kept score, and he carried that into everything he touched.
Competition found him almost by accident.
A friend had signed up for a local contest in Springfield called Rockin' Ribs and had to back out, so Brad and his brother-in-law took the spot.
It was a 70-team field, and the two of them finished sixth or seventh overall with three meat calls.
He calls it the most expensive day of his life, because from that afternoon on the hook was set.
They cooked four or five more contests that year. The next year he cooked fifteen or sixteen.
As he puts it, it has been all gas and no brake ever since.
The name came before the winning did.
After that first borrowed-team cook, Brad and his wife Sarah sat down to brainstorm something of their own. Sarah landed it in a sentence, Gettin' Basted, and he knew instantly it was the one.
Everything in barbecue is a double entendre, he says, and the joke fit their world exactly. Their restaurants sit in Branson, a town he affectionately calls Baptist Vegas: risque enough to make you grin, tame enough that the church crowd still files in for lunch afterward.
The name has since gone on more banners than he can count, and it started as a punchline his wife came up with at the kitchen table.
Ask him for the moment he is proudest of and he does not reach for the Jack or the Royal.
He reaches for that same Springfield contest, one year later. Exactly a year after his first cook, on his hometown ground, against 70 teams, he won it.
He had circled the date on the calendar. Fifteen years and a wall of major titles later, the hometown win is still the one he tells first.
How Brad Leighninger Qualified in Zagreb, Croatia
What makes Brad unusual, even among champions, is that he treats the whole world as his circuit.
He fits a few international contests in every year. This year alone it was Costa Rica and Croatia, with Australia already on the calendar.
He loves the logistics of it, the borrowed gear and the sourced meat, and he loves the teaching most of all. He runs an educational program called The Barbecue League, he has cooked on Food Network's BBQ Brawl, and he genuinely delights in showing a festival full of Croatians what American barbecue tastes like.
Thousands of people turned out for that one, he says, and watching them embrace the food never gets old.
He had actually booked a teaching class in Croatia before the contest there ever became a BBQ World Cup qualifier.
Then came a twist that is pure Brad.
The weekend before Zagreb, he won a contest he was sure had already punched his ticket, only to comb through the fine print and realize it had not. He had to go do it all over again.
Croatia was the relief, the monkey off his back, and he did not leave it to chance, sourcing better meat and working a little harder because he knew what was on the line.
He won it going away, 714.86 points to the runner-up's 706.24.
Brad Leighninger's Family and His Rivalry With Joe Pearce
None of it happens alone, and the crew he is proudest of shares his last name.
He and Sarah are coming up on twenty-three years married, and their three kids have grown up in the lifestyle. His oldest, Molly, will be a senior this year and has already spent real time in front of cameras, including a run on MasterChef Junior.
She wants to take the whole operation over one day, and Brad says his next project is training her up on both the restaurant and the competition side.
His middle daughter, fifteen, likes to cook too but does not crave the spotlight.
His son was practically raised on the trail. He was two weeks old at a national contest, three weeks old at the American Royal, four weeks old at the Jack.
Before he was a month old, the boy had been to three world championships.
Then there is Joe.
For a stretch of two or three years, Brad and fellow pitmaster Joe Pearce of Slap's BBQ cooked against each other something like 150 times, and Joe, by Brad's telling, finished second to him in nearly all of it.
They took to phoning each other after every contest to complain, and somewhere in all that competing they became close friends.
Joe is still his first call. Brad already knows how he wants the 2027 season to end. He has two goals, he says: win $1,000,000, and make Joe buy him dinner.
What Brad Leighninger Would Do With $1,000,000
He is clear-eyed about the money.
The first fifteen hundred dollars of any million, he jokes, goes straight to his accountant to keep the taxman off the rest, and he has already proven he can spend a seven-figure sum, because he has spent more than that chasing this sport up and down the map.
There would be vacations. There would be a beach.
But the pull of the BBQ World Cup, for a man who has won nearly everything, is not really the prize. It is the chance to be first, to stand on the biggest stage barbecue has ever built, in its inaugural year, and cook.
Twenty-three years of marriage, fifteen years of contests, five restaurants, two halls of fame, and a plane ticket to almost anywhere have all pointed here.
In April, the pitmaster who insists barbecue is a sport gets to prove it in Las Vegas, in front of the whole world, for $1,000,000.
