Vinícius Aguiar: The Brazilian Chef Bound for the BBQ World Cup
An accident kept Vinícius Aguiar out of competition for seven years. In 2026 the MasterChef Brasil culinary producer came back with four friends, a perfect 180 in brisket and a BBQ World Cup seat. Next: Las Vegas and $1,000,000.
In 2019, Vinícius Aguiar was twenty days out from his first Kansas City Barbeque Society contest when an accident took his preparation away.
He could not practise the way he wanted, and after that weekend he did not compete again for seven years.
He never left the kitchen, though.
When he came back in 2026, leading a team of friends that had come together only about three months earlier, the return produced a perfect 180 in brisket and a seat in the BBQ World Cup.
In April 2027 the chef from Jundiaí, Brazil will cook in Las Vegas for $1,000,000.
Vinícius Aguiar, a Chef From Jundiaí, Brazil
Vinícius lives in Jundiaí, a city next to São Paulo, and he has cooked for a living since 2012.
For years his kitchen was a television kitchen.
He worked as a culinary producer on MasterChef Brasil, the Brazilian edition of the cooking competition, part of the crew that keeps the food side of the show running.
Barbecue is something else to him. When he talks about it he does not start with technique. He starts with family.
A barbecue, in his telling, is the moment that pulls everyone together: relatives, friends, little ones underfoot, everyone cooking side by side. Food is part of the family's everyday life, and his family has embraced every step of his career.
The roots run back a generation.
Ask him for the best meal he has ever eaten and he names his grandmother's cooking.
Ask who he would most like beside him at a pit, from anyone who ever lived, and after a long pause he picks his grandfather.
Why Vinícius Aguiar Cooks Brisket, Pork and Texas Style
His team describes its food as Brazilian open-fire cooking blended with American barbecue. Vinícius has studied the American side closely. His regional style is Texas, his first contest was a KCBS contest, and when asked for the greatest pitmaster of all time he names Tuffy Stone.
Brisket sits at the top of his list. In Portuguese he calls it "a menina dos olhos," the apple of everyone's eye, and he knows how much harder it is to work with in Brazil, where the cut is difficult to come by.
Pork is the other passion, a Brazilian favorite he has worked hard on, chasing texture and flavor.
The 2019 Setback That Kept Him Out Until 2026
That first KCBS contest in 2019 was supposed to be the start.
The accident twenty days before it changed the plan.
He went in under-prepared, and the competition chapter closed for the next seven years.
The cooking never stopped.
Through those years he kept working in professional kitchens, including his time at MasterChef Brasil, and his family describes him in three words that fit the long wait: persistent, focused, warrior.
Where the Name Bárbaros Gastronomia na Brasa Comes From
The team that brought him back began in a bar.
Five friends, united by food and fire, decided there that they wanted to compete together.
They needed a name, and the answer was sitting with one of them.
Their friend Guga founded Bárbaros BBQ, a barbecue festival first held in 2016 in Americana, in the interior of São Paulo state.
Ten years later it is still going, and its São Paulo edition is the one that sent B.R.A. Barbecue Team to Las Vegas in May 2026.
The friends borrowed its name and added a description of what they do. Gastronomia na brasa means cooking over the embers.
Bárbaros Gastronomia na Brasa was born.
Each of the five brings something different.
Igor has cooked for more than fifteen years and fell in love with American barbecue along the way. Douglas has been a chef at several restaurants. Márcio loves cooking over open fire. Guga worked in restaurants in Australia and traveled the world exploring its cuisines before building his festival.
Then the friends made a choice of their own.
They named Vinícius captain and head cook.
When he was asked who he wanted to thank, he went straight to them, the friends who believed in him and trusted him to lead.
How Bárbaros Gastronomia na Brasa Qualified for the BBQ World Cup
The crew came together about three months before the contests that counted, and it did not take long to show what it could do.
At the team's first KCBS contest in 2026, its brisket scored a perfect 180, the highest score a single entry can earn, and the team finished fourth overall.
The seat came on September 26, 2026, at the tenth-anniversary Bárbaros BBQ in Americana, the same city where the festival began.
By the team's account, it won the ribs category and placed third in brisket on the way to qualifying.
Bárbaros Gastronomia na Brasa became team No. 65 in the BBQ World Cup field and the second team from Brazil, after B.R.A. Barbecue Team, to earn a place.
For a cook who had waited seven years, the moment carried weight.
"It was a big return," he said through his wife's translation.
He was, by his own description, very, very proud.
The Family Behind Vinícius Aguiar
His wife sat beside him for his Road to 1 Million interview, translating his Portuguese into English and leaning into the same camera.
Together they have a two-year-old, and a second child is due around November 10.
That makes the next few months full.
The baby comes first, and in April the family plans to make its first trip to Las Vegas together. None of them has been to the city before.
Vinícius Aguiar's Road to Las Vegas and $1,000,000
The BBQ World Cup means something particular to cooks in Brazil.
They follow the American scene closely, he explained, and many of the cooks they learn from will be in the same field in Las Vegas.
Competing alongside those names, doing what they love, and showing Brazilian cooking to the world is what sets this contest apart for him.
Vinícius does not take the seat lightly.
He calls representing Brazil "a huge responsibility," and he knows there are many strong cooks across South America who could be carrying the flag instead.
His plan is to answer that with work.
The team is going with all of its strength, study and dedication, aiming to finish among the best.
On the question of the $1,000,000, the family settled it quickly.
His wife has already claimed the prize.
Interview host Shannon Pruitt summed it up the way Americans do: happy wife, happy life.
Beyond that, Vinícius says, he has no idea yet.
What he is sure about is what makes great barbecue. His answer came in one word of Portuguese, "o amor," love, with passion right behind it.
Those two things carried him through seven years away from competition and into a field of the world's best.
Fans can follow along on his Instagram, @chefviniaguiar, where he shares his cooking and his everyday barbecue on the road to Las Vegas.
Before the interview ended, he apologized for his English and promised to keep learning before April.
Shannon told him not to worry.
This is a global event, she said, and the Brazilians always bring the good energy.
In Las Vegas, the brisket will do the talking.
